From Graces Guide

William Pollard emigrated from England to Philadelphia in 1789. There, he was was granted one of the first America patents, under the 1790 Patent Act. With capital from John Nicholson, he and Nicholson established a water-powered spinning mill on the Shuylkill River, but this failed.[1]
