1785 Born in Nova Scotia

1797 Midshipman on the Cleopatra

Took part in the battle of Trafalgar; promoted to Lieutenant.

1815 His final ship , Resolute, (which he commanded) was paid off.

1823 Award from the Society of Arts for his improvements in rigging ships; later awards for other inventions.

1829-32 In charge of the Falmouth Packet

1836 Patents for improvements in capstans and other machinery

1842 Briefly had command of the Victory at Portsmouth

He devoted much of his life to inventions, often with naval application.

1846 died
