WILLIAM SANCROFT RANDALL, born on the 3rd March, 1851, served articles to Messrs. Head, Wrightson and Company, of Stockton-on-Tees.

After being engaged for two years as an Assistant Engineer in the Cumnock Works of Messrs. James Baird and Company, he was employed in 1874 by Messrs. Hugh Wallace and Company, of Battersea, to design buildings and plant for the manufacture of chemicals.

From 1875 to 1877 he was engaged for Messrs. R. W. Wallace and Company, of Mark Lane, in designing plant for the manufacture of sulphate of ammonia, and during that time he prepared all the plans for the large sulphate plant of the Gas Light and Coke Company at Beckton.

In 1877 Mr. Randall entered the service of the Gas Light and Coke Company as Chief Draughtsman at Beckton, and in 1885 he was appointed Assistant to Mr. Trewby, the Chief Engineer of the Company, which post he held until his death. Under Mr. Trewby he was engaged on large extensions to the various works of the Company, such as river-embankments, piers, jetties, quays, viaducts, gas-holders, retort-houses, and gas-plant generally.

Mr. Randall died at his residence, 23 Wellington Boad, Old Charlton, after a week's illness, on the 7th October, 1900. His ability, genial disposition, and sterling character endeared him to a large circle of friends.

Mr. Randall was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 1st December, 1891.
