Rear Admiral Sir William Symonds, brother of Rear Admiral T. E. Symonds

1782 Born in Bury St Edmunds[1], son of Captain Thomas Symonds

1794 Joined the Navy as a midshipman

1825 Designed and built a corvette, the Columbine, which he then commanded

1827 Promoted to Captain

1831 Designed and built the Palatine, a brig, for the Duke of Portland, as an improvement on the Columbine.

1832 became Surveyor General of the Navy

1835 Elected F.R.S.

1847 Retired from his role as Surveyor General

1848 Nominated C.B.

1851 William Symonds 68, retired, lived in Godshill, Isle of Wight, with Elizabeth Mary Symonds 75[2]

Promoted Read-Admiral on the retired list

1856 Died whilst on his way from Nice to Marseilles.
