WILLIAM TOPLEY, F.R.S., was born at Greenwich on the 13th of March, 1841. After receiving some education at local schools, he passed to the Royal School of Mines, where he obtained his scientific training.

In 1862 he was appointed to the staff of the Geological Survey of England, and the rest of his life was spent in connection with that department and in the advancement of the science of geology and of its applications.....[more]
