1870 ' Monster Steam Hammer for Russia. - Several well-known engineers assembled on Saturday afternoon at the Atlas Works, Cardiff, to witness the casting of an immense cylinder, forming part of a large steam hammer now in oourse of erection by the Messrs. Winby Brothers, the proprietors of the above works. The casting was a successful one, and the cylinder will be bored to the following dimensions : diameter, 45 in.; stroke, 10ft.; thickness of metal, 3 in. The cylinder was cast with box plate, steam ways, and steam chest in one, and weighs 18 tons. The steam hammer for which this cylinder is intended has been designed by Mr. Macpherson, of St. Petersburg, one of the proprietors of the Baltic Iron Works, in which establishment it is intended to be used for forging large guns and other heavy work. The entire hammer will weigh over 100 tons, exclusive of the base and anvil block, and will be a double-action steam hammer, the most powerful, it is said, yet manufactured.'[2]
