1887 Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd. was established as a reed organ manufacturer by Torakusu Yamaha and was incorporated on 12 October 1897.

1900 the company started the production of pianos.

After World War II, the company turned to the manufacture of motorcycles. 125 of the first design were built in the first year of production (1954), named in honour of the founder.

Also, in 1954 the Yamaha Music School was founded.

1955 the success of the first motorcycle model resulted in the founding of Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd.

Yamaha grew into the world's largest manufacturer of musical instruments and a leading manufacturer of semiconductors, audio/visual, computer related products, sporting goods, home appliances, specialty metals, and industrial robots.
