The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) was a university based in the centre of the city of Manchester. It specialised in technical and scientific subjects and was a major centre for research. 

It had its origins in the [[Manchester Mechanics Institute]] 

1966 The Manchester [[Manchester Mechanics Institute|College of Technology]] was renamed the [[University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology]] (UMIST) but remained largely independent of the Victoria University. 

1994 UMIST became a completely autonomous university with its own degree-awarding powers. 

2004 On 1 October, the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) was subsumed by the Victoria University of Manchester (commonly called the [[University of Manchester]]) to form a new entity also called '''The University of Manchester'''.
