A chain of supermarkets

1962 Founded in the UK by the American Safeway Inc.

1963 First purpose-built store was opened in Bedford

1987 Had 133 stores

1987 Sold to Argyll. Argyll then began converting the larger Presto supermarkets to the Safeway brand.

1996 July. Argyll conducted a share buyback and renamed itself Safeway plc.

2004 Safeway was acquired by Morrisons, Bradford-based supermarket chain. At that time it had 479 stores
