John Skillman (1888-1944) Civil Engineer and County Surveyor for Devon
1911 Residing at High St, Thatcham, Newbury: John Skillman (age 22 born Thatcham), Municipal Surveyor. With his father Horatio Bentor Skillman, a headmaster, his wife and siblings.[1]
1939 Residing at Maroubra, Dunsford Road, Exeter, Chartered Civil Engineer.[2]
1944 Died. 'Mr. John Skillman, Deputy County Surveyor for Devon, of "Maroubra'. Dunsford Hill, Exeter, died suddenly 011 March 16th. Fifty-five years of age, he was appointed to the staff the County Surveyor in 1913 and promoted the position of Deputy County Surveyor six years later. He was largely responsible for carrying into effect the million pounds road construction scheme of the Council, and also for the construction the Exeter bypass. Recently he was appointed chairman of the East Devon Town and Country Planning (Technical) Sub-Committee. and was also member of the South Devon Regional Planning (Technical) Sub-Committee. He leaves a widow and two sons.'[3]
