| Born on 29th January 1850 at Greenwich but emigrated to New South Wales in 1866.

| From 1883 he dedicated his efforts to aviation living off a private income. He is famous for his design of box kite which became very successful and was the basis of many other designs including those of [[Samuel Cody]]. He refused to patent this design and made it freely available to other experimenters.
