The Cadell family played a key role in the development of a coke-fired iron industry in Scotland on a large scale in the last two decades of the eighteenth century.

1769 Charles Gascoigne took over the management of the works from William Cadell, Junior
1770 The works became Carron Co
1770 October. The Cadells exchanged their Carron Co shareholding for the Cramond Iron Works where Thomas Edington was manager.
