1950 Obituary [1]
"KARL BROZYNA, Dr. Eng. (Vienna), was an outstanding automobile engineer and metallurgist and had been associated with the Austin Motor Company, Ltd., for thirty-five years.
He was born in Austria in 1878 and, after receiving his general education, commenced a five years' course of theoretical and practical training at the government technical school at Steyr, where he became a gold medallist and obtained the mechanical engineering diploma of the University of Vienna.
From 1897 to 1900 he was employed in the Austrian small-arms factory at Steyr as departmental chief draughtsman and technical assistant to the chief inspector. He then came to this country and joined the firm of Messrs. White and Poppe, of Coventry, as chief draughtsman and joint shop manager.
Six years later he was appointed designer and works manager of the motor-car department of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., of Elswick, and during his period of office carried out the reorganization of that department : a car showing the excellence of his design may still be seen in the Engineering Museum on the Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne.
He began, in 1914, his long connection with the Austin Motor Company with the post of chief engineer in the experimental department, subsequently becoming chief inspector. At the time of his death, which occurred on 7th April 1949, he was holding the position of head of the research department. Mr. Brozyna, who was elected a Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1916, was awarded the Crompton Medal for a paper on "Cylinder Material and Finish", which he presented in 1936. He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1947."
