"FRANCIS OLIVER BECKETT spent nearly the whole of his professional career in the service of the [[Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Co|Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Company, Ltd]]. He received his general education at King Williams College, Isle of Man, and his technical training in the South Kensington Science and Art Departments, where he gained the Queen's Prize for machine design and the Silver Medal for steam and applied mechanics. His apprenticeship was served in the dynamo works of [[Siemens Brothers and Co|Siemens Brothers]], Charlton, from 1883 to 1886, and in the engineering branch of the Woolwich Arsenal from 1886 to 1890. He then went to sea as a marine engineer, and in 1895 as chief engineer obtained his Board of Trade first-class certificate. After serving the Rumanian Government as chief marine engineer for three years, he joined the staff of the [[Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Co]], Manchester, and in 1900 was appointed engineer surveyor for the county of Lincolnshire. From 1911 until his retirement he was in charge of a London district. Mr. Beckett, whose death in his eighty-third year occurred on 18th April 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920."

After serving his apprenticeship in the iron and steel works of the [[Blaenavon Co|Blaenavon Company, Ltd.]], from 1894 to 1902, he gained experience as a junior in the drawing offices of [[C. Akrill and Co|C. Akrill and Company, Ltd.]], West Bromwich, and [[Richardsons, Westgarth and Co|Richardson, Westgarth and Company, Ltd.]], Middlesbrough. He then began his long connection with [[Simon-Carves|Simon-Carves Ltd.]], and after being employed in a similar capacity for five years was promoted to be chief draughtsman in the coke oven and recovery plant department. He was transferred to the boiler department (later the power-plant department) in 1925, where he carried out similar duties until 1936 when he became chief engineer of the same department. He retired in 1948. Mr. Bennett had been a Member of the Institution since 1938."

FRANCIS ALBERT BENNETT was in the service of Simon Carves, Ltd., Stockport, general engineers, from 1906 until his death, which occurred on 19th June 1951. He was born in 1879 at Blaenavon, Mon., and received his education at West Bromwich Technical Institute. After serving his apprenticeship in the iron and steel works of the Blaenavon Company, Ltd., from 1894 to 1902, he gained experience as a junior in the drawing offices of C.
