JOHN THOMSON died at Eston, Cleveland, on August 29, 1911. He was born at Lemmington-on-Tyne in 1846, and was the eldest son of the late David Thomson, furnace-manager of the Tyne Ironworks.
At sixteen years of age he was sent to study mining engineering under his uncle, the late Mr. Andrew Landale, at the Lochgelly Coal and Iron Works, Fifeshire, and after completing his term of pupilage he was appointed under-manager to the works under Mr. Landale.
In 1872 he undertook the management of the West Muir Collieries, near Glasgow, which post he held until 1876, when he was appointed manager of the South Skelton Mine, in Cleveland.
In 1880 he took over the management of the Eston Mines belonging to Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., and a few years later became general manager to all the ironstone mines of that company in Cleveland, a position which he held until the time of his death.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1878.
