JOHN JOB CREW BRADFIELD, C.M.G., was born at Sandgate, Queensland, on the 26th December, 1867, and died at Sydney, New South Wales at the age of 75.
He was educated at Ipswich Grammar School, Queensland and at Sydney University.
He received his practical training with the Queensland Government Railways, and in 1891 entered the Public Works Department of New South Wales,
In 1912 he was appointed Chief Engineer, Sydney Harbour bridge and Metropolitan Railway construction. He designed the scheme of city and suburban railways for the city of Sydney and constructed the City Railway by day labour, at an approximate cost of £10,000,000. He was responsible for drawing up the specifications for the Sydney Harbour bridge and constructed the approaches at a cost of £2,000,000, and, as Chief Engineer of the New South Wales Public Works Department, he supervised the contract for the main bridge (cost £4,239,000). He also prepared the design for the Brisbane bridge and supervised its construction.
He was a lecturer and examiner in engineering at Sydney University, and in 1913 was appointed a Fellow of the Senate. During the war of 1914-18 he was a member of the Patents Investigation Board and a member of the Board which established the first Civil Aviation School in Australia in 1916. In 1933, he set up a consulting practice, and in the same year was appointed a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Dr. Bradfield was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 7th February, 1893, and was transferred to the class of Member on the 10th January, 1911.
