James Syder (1842-1913), chairman of Victorian Railways

Mr. James Syder, who for many years was connected with the Victorian Railway department, died yesterday at a private hospital at East Melbourne. He had been suffering from pneumonia, but had been ill for about ten days only.
The late Mr. Syder, who was 71 years of age at the time of his death, joined the Railway department as a clerk on 1st July, 1861. Subsequently he became a stationmaster, and was appointed district superintendent in 1887. Four years later he was promoted to the position of outdoor assistant traffic manager, and in January, 1893, became traffic manager.
From 1st April, 1894, to 30th June, 1896, he acted as chairman of the Railway Commissioners and retired when Mr. John Mathieson was appointed sole commissioner.
