Lionel Bigg-Wither, who died on 27th October 1959, was associated with the Institution for many years and was actively concerned with the Indian Advisory Council. An Associate Member in 1902 he transferred to Member in 1912. He was also a Member of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers.
Mr. Bigg-Wither was educated at Clifton College, Bristol, and in 1894 he joined the Metropolitan and District Railway Works at West Kensington as an apprentice.
He went out to India immediately after his apprenticeship was over and from 1898 until 1931 he served the Great Indian Peninsula Railway in various capacities, finally as Chief Mechanical Engineer.
For a short time during the 1914-18 war he returned to Britain to work as an Inspector at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, and in 1917 he was appointed Assistant Director, Military Railways in Mesopotamia with the local rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
During the 1939-45 war Mr. Bigg-Wither was with the Ministry of Supply as a Production Officer.
