Sir Ernest Woodhouse Smith, pioneer in fuel technology
1884 Born in Gorton, Manchester.
Educated at Arnold School, Blackpool , and at the University of Manchester.
After graduating in chemistry he carried out research at Manchester on the synthesis of hydrogen cyanide by heating carbon rods in the presence of gases containing hydrogen and nitrogen.
1907 Appointed by the Institution of Gas Engineers to work at Leeds University - the first such appointment of a research chemist
of the Birmingham Gas Department's Research Laboratory
1920 Moved to be technical director of the Woodall-Duckham companies at the invitation of Sir Arthur Duckham
1944 Entered public service. He was one of the founders of the Gas Research Board
President of the Institute of Fuel and of the Smoke Abatement Society
1960 Died
