. . . became assistant to the naval editor of the Army and Navy Gazette. . . He was knighted in 1902 chiefly, it is said, on account of his History of the Navy. He was a contributor for many years to Brassey's Naval Annual, Whitaker's Almanack, and other books of reference. . . .
