Born the son of Francis Lewis
1841 Living at Trafalgar Place, Salford: Mary Lewis (age 40), Mary (age 23), Joseph Lewis (age 21), a Mechanic; and Benjamin Lewis (age 20), a Mechanic. [1]
1846 October 1st. Married. 'Joseph, eldest son of Francis Lewis, Esq., of Salford, to Eliza second daughter of the late John Atherton, Esq., of Hollingworth, Cheshire'[2]
1851 Lodging at the Railway Hotel, Medlar with Wesham (age 40 born Manchester), a Machine Maker and Widower. [3]
1853 Listed as 'Lewis, Joseph, engineer (F. Lewis and Sons) Ho. Gore Crescent, Pendleton.'[4]
1854 Patent. Joseph Lewis of Salford, machinist. 'improvements in apparatus for drilling or boring metals and other substances'[5]
1857 Patent. 'for improvements in machinery or apparatus for reaping and mowing'[6]
1858 Patent. 'improvements in machinery or apparatus for making bricks, tiles, and other similar articles'[7]
1861/62 Passing mention that Joseph may have been bankrupt around this time [8]
