IRWINE JOHN WHITTY, born at Kilrush, County Clare, on the 18th June, 1839, died at Bristol on the 22nd February, 1913.
After completing his education at Queen's College, Cork, he served a pupilage with the late Mr. P. R. Roddy in the construction of the Cork and Limerick railways, and in 1863 joined the staff of the East Indian Railway, and served for 16 years in the development of that system.
In 1879 he was appointed Chief Engineer for the construction of the Darjeeling and Himalaya Railway, on the completion of which he joined the staff of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway. He retired in 1889 with the rank of Executive Engineer.
Mr. Whitty was elected an Associate of The Institution on the 6th February, 1877, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 30th October, 1877.
