GEORGE HENRY BANISTER, C.B.E., was for several years manager of the ordnance works of [[Vickers|Messrs. Vickers]] at Barrow in Furness. | |||
He was born in Woolwich in 1856, and in 1872 he entered the [[Woolwich Arsenal|Royal Arsenal]] as engineer apprentice. He then became a draughtsman and in 1882 was awarded a Whitworth Scholarship. After a distinguished career at Woolwich in the design and production of ordnance, he was appointed in 1890 mechanical assistant to the superintendent, and patented several important inventions relating to gun mountings. Throughout his career he was especially interested in technical education and while at the Royal Arsenal he was a governor of the Woolwich Polytechnic, and served on the Technical Education Board. | |||
In 1901 he left Government service and joined Messrs. Vickers as manager of the ordnance works. He later became manager of the engineering section of the yard. In 1910 he was made a special director of the firm. For his work during the War, the C.B.E. was conferred on him. | |||
He retired in 1923 and lived at Sidcup, where he died on 2nd April 1934. | |||

GEORGE HENRY BANISTER, C.B.E., was for several years manager of the ordnance works of Messrs. Vickers at Barrow in Furness.
He was born in Woolwich in 1856, and in 1872 he entered the Royal Arsenal as engineer apprentice. He then became a draughtsman and in 1882 was awarded a Whitworth Scholarship. After a distinguished career at Woolwich in the design and production of ordnance, he was appointed in 1890 mechanical assistant to the superintendent, and patented several important inventions relating to gun mountings.
