He was born in 1877 at Derby, and was educated at Denstone College, Staffs. From 1896 to 1899 he attended evening classes in engineering subjects, and then went to the [[Haslam Foundry and Engineering Co]], Derby, for his practical training. After serving his apprenticeship, he spent a further three years, from 1899 to 1901, with this company on general erection work, with an interim period as second refrigerating engineer on [[SS Karamea]]. He then joined the [[British Electric Car Co]], Trafford Park, until 1904, when he was appointed assistant foreman of the machine shop of the [[Midland Railway]] carriage and wagon works at Derby. After a year, in 1905, Mr. Cox went abroad as supervising workshop engineer at Umtali on the Beira and Mashonaland and [[Rhodesian Railways]]. From 1915 until 1924 he was manager and chief engineer to [[Tekka Taiping|Tekka Taiping, Ltd]]., at Taiping, Federated Malay States. In 1925 he went to Siam to open up a tin mine of [[Huey Yot Tin Dredging|Huey Yot Tin Dredging Ltd]]., and in his capacity as manager and chief engineer was responsible for the production, development, and maintenance work of the mine.
