WALTER SYDNEY ACKROYD BACKHOUSE was born in 1881 and received his education at the Manchester Technical Institute. He served his apprenticeship with [[Mather and Platt|Messrs. Mather and Platt, Ltd.]], of Manchester, from 1898 to 1903, and continued in their employment as erector for a further four years. After holding brief appointments as resident engineer to the [[Glasgow Patents Co|Glasgow Patents Company]] and as manager in the water softening plant department of [[Isaac Storey and Sons|Messrs. Isaac Storey and Sons]], Manchester, he went into business on his own account in 1909 and as principal of [[Backhouse Brothers|Messrs. Backhouse Brothers]], of Cheadle, was engaged on general motor repairs.


During the war of 1914-18 he erected plant for the [[Ministry of Munitions]] and later produced munitions in his own works. Since 1920 he had continued his association with the motor industry, for which he also acted in a consultative capacity, until his death, which occurred on 13th January 1944. Mr. Backhouse was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1913.

WALTER SYDNEY ACKROYD BACKHOUSE was born in 1881 and received his education at the Manchester Technical Institute. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Mather and Platt, Ltd., of Manchester, from 1898 to 1903, and continued in their employment as erector for a further four years.
