1871 Alexander Henry of Edinburgh developed an improved breech loading rifle; one of his earlier rifle designs had been considered by a Select Committee as a possible armament for the British Army. Eventually the choice was made to combine Martini's breech with Henry's rifled barrel as the Martini-Henry Rifle.[1]
1895 Alexander Henry Limited was incorporated, with capital of £25,000, to acquire the business of gun, rifle, and ammunition maker owned by the late Alexander Henry at Edinburgh and London, and that of Brown and Coster Limited.[2]
