in Blaenavon, near Newport, Gwent
Part of Blaenavon Industrial Landscape
This is a historically significant iron bridge, built in 1812 to carry a tramway taking coal to the ironworks. It was subsequently used by pedestrians going between Blaenavon town and Forgeside. Deterioration led to ad hoc repairs, and it was eventually listed as 'Endangered' by UNESCO. It has recently been extensively and discretely rebuilt, the original cast iron members being retained.
In comparison with, say, Draethen Iron Bridge, it will be seen that the cast iron arches are shallow, and the castings are very thin, but stiffened by a flange.
