1870 'The Fatal Boiler Explosion in Stafford - The total number of deaths resulting from the boiler explosion at Messrs. Kemersley's ironworks, Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, is now increased to 11, and unfortunately other deaths are probable. The inquest was opened yesterday, when the boiler tenter said that the boiler was all right during Thursday night, and up to 10 minutes before the explosion. Other witnesses corroborated this statement. In cross-examination, it was elicited that the exploded boiler had been cleaned out weekly, the others being cleaned out every three weeks. At the last cleaning two youths went inside and they deposed that they perceived no defect. There had been frequent slight leakages, which were reported to the engine-man, who instructed the boiler-makers to repair the boiler. There had been more than one such repair this year.
