John Boulton (1790-1853) of Glossop, who claimed to be a relative of Matthew Boulton, and to have financed James Watt and had become the senior partner of the world-renowned Boulton and Watt, of Soho Foundry, Birmingham
1790 Born in Glossop the son of James Boulton and his wife Sarah Warhurst
c1821 Married Nancy Wright
1823 Birth of son Isaac Watt Boulton
1827 Birth of daughter Sarah
1830 He was a millwright and moved to Ashton becoming the manager of the Peter Platt and Co at Flash Hall Mills.
1833 He was appointed to a a position in Middleton.
1835 Became a partner in Peter Platt and Co
1839 He took over the Egret Mills but this enterprise failed and he was bankrupted
1841 Living at Katherine Street, Ashton (age 50), Agent. With wife Ann (age 43), son Isaac (age 17) and daughter Sarah (age 14). [1]
1841 Listed as an agent for the West of England Fire and Life Assurance Co [2]
Started a passenger carrying canal boat company between Ashton and Guide Bridge
Later opened a canal boat company on the Peak Forest Canal between Dog Lane Station, Dukinfield and Marple and Macclesfield, a distance of some twenty miles
1845 Invents a way of stopping railway carriages [3]
1846 Declared a bankrupt. Described as of Ashton-under-Lyne, a carrier, dealer and chapman. [4]
1847 January. Convicted with his son Isaac of stealing a boat and sentenced to three months imprisonment [5]
1851 Living at Katherine Street, Ashton (age 60 born Glossop), Agent. With wife Nancy (age 57). One servant. [6]
1851 John Boulton of Ashton-under-Lyne, Cotton spinner. [7]
