Sydney Ernest Smith was born in 1881.
In 1899 he joined the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., as Assistant Engineer, becoming successively Assistant Manager and Director and General Manager.
In 1910 he joined the Bristol Aeroplane Company as Manager, becoming a Director in 1928.
He died in June, 1943, at the age of 62.
He was elected a Member in 1934.
