William James Gregg (1890-1931) of the Muntz's Metal Co and H. H. Vivian and Co

W. J. GREGG died on May 4, 1931, at the age of forty-one.
He was born at Redditch, but, except for the first twelve months, was a resident in Birmingham all his life. At the age of fourteen he commenced work in the offices of Muntz Metal Co|Messrs. Muntz Metal Company, where he soon moved into the works, and progressed rapidly until he held the position of Acting Superintendent, to which position he was assigned in July 1917. The appointment was confirmed by a personal letter from Sir Gerard Muntz, who took a great interest in Mr. Gregg's progress.
During the early part of this period he attended the School of Technology both at Smethwick and Birmingham, and obtained his City and Guilds Certificate in Iron and Steel Manufacture in 1911, in which year he also took honours in Metallurgy.
In January 1918 he was appointed Assistant Works Manager to Messrs. H. H. Vivian & Co., Ltd., and ultimately became Works Manager of the same firm in March 1925. This position he held until his death.
Mr. Gregg was elected a member of the Institute of Metals on December 29, 1924.
