1830 Born at Helston
1844 On the staff of the East Lancashire Railway and of the Manchester, Sheffied and Lancashire companies. He was Chief Accountant of the West Midland Railway
1869 Secretary of the Midland Railway
1869 'Mr. James Williams took his first railway appointment in 1844; was on the staff of the East Lancashire, and of the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lancashire Companies; and was chief accountant of the West Midland Railway. He also was engaged with a large staff in Ireland, under the direction of the Irish Railways Commission, and aided in the preparation of the report submitted in 1868. Mr. Williams became Secretary of the Midland Company, January 1st, 1869.'[1]

James Williams, secretary of the Midland Railway from January 1869 to May 1899 died yesterday at his residence, Litchurch, Derby. He was born at Helston, Cornwall, 1830, and began his business career with the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway, since absorbed by the London and South-Western Company.
In 1844 (five years later), he transferred his services to the East Lancashire Railway.............
His wife predeceased him by some 25 years and left no family.
