After serving his time as an engine fitter with Messrs. G. and J. Weir, Ltd., Glasgow, from 1917 to 1922, he gained further experience as junior draughtsman to the British Electric Plant Co, Alloa. From there he went to Radcliffe, Lancs, to take up the appointment of chief draughtsman to Messrs. John Wolstenholme and Son, makers of waterworks and power station plant.
