He invented the steam-tiller, which was adopted for many larger ships, both naval and commercial.  In connection with this he also devised the telemotor, a hydraulic apparatus designed to facilitate the control of the steering gear from the bridge, by dispensing with the cumbersome chains and shafting which had been hitherto used.
