Born | Born on 4 April 1836, William Gleason emigrated to America from Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1851. Learned the trade of machinist in the Rochester, NY shop of Asa Smith. Worked at Colt's Armory during the Civil War. Returned to Rochester in 1865 to start his own works. Developed a bevel gear planing machine in 1874. Latterly he transferred control to his son James E. Gleason and daughter Kate Gleason.
