Born in Oldham, Lancs. Emigrated to the USA in 1861, settling first in New York, then moving to Cincinnati in 1868. He joined the John Steptoe Machine Tool Co, and was soon appointed as Superintendent. In 1888 he joined in parnership with [[Albert S.
