1902 August 9th. 'Over 8000 people attended the motor-bicycle races at Plymouth on Saturday. The Frenchman, Victor Regal rode on a 10 horse-power Bluchet, repeatedly lapping other competitors in heats. In the final five miles scratch, open to all classes and powers of motors, Martin, London, 2.5 power Excelsior, was first away, Rigal catching him at a terrible rate in the third lap. Wright, of Coventry 2.5-power Excelsior, also caught and passed Martin, Regal nearly lapping the latter at the conclusion. Time, 7min. 58 2-5secs. One mile international scratch was a popular race open to all clashes of motors, the first and fastest second in the two heats competing for the final. Martin (England), Yates (England), and Philipstal (Germany) were first, second, and third in the first heat; and Rigal (France), Wright (England), and Heath (England) were first, second, and third in the second. Martin rode finely the final, but compared with Rigal was slow, the latter winning by nearly lap. Wright made a bad start.'[1]
