1946 Founded by Rupert Hart-Davis and his friend David Garnett. The firm enjoyed immediate critical success if not financial success.
Published distinguished books, all superbly produced, Hart-Davis was no businessman
1955 The firm was sold to Heinemann, whilst keeping the Hart-Davis name, the same premises, and editorial authority.
1962 Bill Jovanovich, president of the New York publishers Harcourt Brace, acquired the firm.
1963 Jovanovich decided to liquidate the business. Several London publishers cut off all relations with Jovanovich. The business was sold to Granada.
