John Napier, of Merchiston (1550–1617), mathematician
1550 Born at Merchiston Castle, the first child of Sir Archibald Napier of Merchiston (d. 1608) and his first wife, Janet Bothwell.
Napier displayed interest in many different fields and contributed in several ways but his greatest achievement is universally recognised as the invention of logarithms. This was first made public in 1614.
