DANIEL FIFE, whose death in his seventy-fifth year occurred on 19th November 1946, held for many years the important position of chief mechanical engineer to the Clyde Navigation Trustees.
He was born at Ayr and received his education at the Paisley Technical School and Glasgow Technical College. His apprenticeship was served with Messrs. Fleming and Ferguson, shipbuilders and engineers, of Paisley, from 1888 to 1895, for whom he was engaged for a further three years as a draughtsman, and for a similar period as outside manager.
He began, in 1901, his long connection with the Clyde Navigation Trustees on his appointment as assistant mechanical engineer. His promotion to the post of chief mechanical engineer dated from 1923, an appointment he retained until his retirement in March 1936. Mr. Fife, who had been a Member of the Institution since 1916, was the author of a paper published in the PROCEEDINGS in 1923, entitled "Modern Dock Appliances at Glasgow Harbour, including the handling of Grain in bulk, also Dredging Plant", for which he was awarded by the Council the Water Arbitration Prize.
