John Dixon (1796-1865) M. Inst. C.E. of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway
1796 November 25th. Born at Staindrop, Durham, the son of John Dixon and his wife Elizabeth Waynman, and brother to Edward Dixon (1809-1877) and Jeremiah Dixon.
Started work for Edmund Backhouse, a relative
1821 Joined the Stockton and Darlington Railway
1825 Surveyed the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway
1826 Company officer of the S&DR
One of the three resident engineers during the construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and chief assistant to George Stephenson
1837 Married Tace Yarrow, daughter of Thomas Yarrow in London
1840s Superintendent of the locomotive works of the Stockton and Darlington Railway at Shildon
