1913 Merger with [[Lassen and Hjort]] Ltd to form [[United Water Softeners]] although the 2 companies seem to have continued operating as separate companies.
The "Permutit" process consists in treating the water with a chemical combination of alumina and silica with a sodium (or calcium, magnesium, or manganese) base, resulting in an exchange of the sodium base of the ''Permutit'' with an equivalent quantity of calcium or magnesium in the water, liberating an equivalent quantity of sodium, which passes forward in solution in the softened water.
