The family were driven from their adopted country, as a result of the great revolution of 1789, and a member of the family, Philip Frederick Muntz, settled in Amsterdam and began business as a merchant; subsequently he removed to Birmingham.
Partly on the advice of Matthew Boulton, he bought a share in the firm of Mynors/Minors and Robert Purden, merchants in Birmingham. The firm was later known as Muntz and Purden.
