The "North End" of the Lancaster Canal reached as far as Preston, from where there was a 5 mile gap to the "South End" which began at Walton Summit and ran to Wigan. This gap was filled by the Preston and Walton (Summit) Tramroad which was constructed because the canal company could not finance a aqueduct across the River Ribble.
