1919 William Williams combined with two other distillers, Alexander and Macdonald of Leith and Greenlees Brothers of London to form Macdonald, Greenlees and Williams (Distillers) Limited. The company went into liquidation in 1926 with the assets being acquired by the Distillers Co. A new subsidiary was set up, Macdonald Greenlees Limited. This company was dissolved in 2010
 
The construction of Glendullan established the last of seven distilleries in Dufftown during a period of rapid expansion, making it the supposed malt whisky capital of the world. It was said that "Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown stands on seven stills"
