Wilhelmus Adrianus van Berkel (1869-1952) was a butcher with an interest in mechanical engineering. He developed a machine with a rotating blade for slicing meat.
In 1898 Van Berkel established a factory in Rotterdam. During the First World War, production diversified to include trade scales, lathes, mechanical instruments in general and even aircraft.
Wilhelmus van Berkel died in Switzerland in 1952.
