At the peak of production, they employed 9,000 men in the various metal and wood working trades - blacksmiths, boiler makers, brass and iron foundrymen, coppersmiths, coachbuilders, locomotive erectors, fitters, turners, pattern and template makers, as well as painters, draughtsmen, tracers and managers.
