| "Professor W. H . Greenwood (1846-1905), who was born at Manchester and received his scientific training at the Owens College there and at the Royal School of Mines and University College, London, came to Birmingham in 1885 and for many years held a most important position with the [[BSA|Birmingham Small Arms and Metal Company]]. In 1869

| he obtained a senior Whitworth Scholarship and became Assistant Manager at the [[Whitworth works]] in Manchester in 1871. He was sent to Russia in 1875 as Chief Engineer to the Government Ordnance Works at Obouchoff, near St. Petersburg. On returning to England in 1880 he became connected with the [[Landore Siemens Steel Co|Landore Siemens Steel Company]], and five years later accepted the Professorship of Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy in the University College, Sheffield - that is before the foundation of the University. His Manual on Metallurgy and numerous papers are well known and of great interest in this particular branch of science."
