* 1839 Sale Notice: 'T0 BE SOLD, Complete without boilers, a 45-horses 'CONDENSING STEAM ENGINE, made by the Haigh Foundry Company, Wigan, which has only been at work two years. The only reason of parting with it is to make room for a larger one. - ALSO TO BE SOLD, the Cylinder, Side Pipes, Air Pump, and Condensor of a Fourteen. Horses' engine, which is parted with for the same reason. - Location: The 1915/1922 O.S. Map[2] shows the mill to be quite large, and comparison with the 1849 map shows that it had expanded 'inland' from the River Irwell, the older eastern wall following the curvature of the river. The river frontage was approx. 700 ft long.
