| FREDERICK GEORGE SMITH was born in 1883 and, after serving his apprenticeship with the [[Bedford Engineering Co|Bedford Engineering Company]], entered the drawing office of [[Jessop and Appleby Brothers|Messrs. Jessop and Appleby]]. Two years later, in 1906, he became chief draughtsman to [[Wellman, Seaver and Head|Messrs. Wellman, Seaver and Head, Ltd.]], and began a long association with that firm and its successor, the [[Wellman, Smith, Owen Engineering Corporation]], of Westminster, which lasted for thirty-eight years. He was promoted to the post of chief engineer in 1910 and was appointed managing director in 1916.

| On the reconstitution of the company in 1920 under its present title he became a partner and held the appointment of chief engineer, occupying this position until his death, which occurred at Purley on 1st March 1943. Mr. Smith was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1906 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1910, and to Membership in 1918.
