FREDERICK GEORGE SMITH was born in 1883 and, after serving his apprenticeship with the [[Bedford Engineering Co|Bedford Engineering Company]], entered the drawing office of [[Jessop and Appleby Brothers|Messrs. Jessop and Appleby]]. Two years later, in 1906, he became chief draughtsman to [[Wellman, Seaver and Head|Messrs. Wellman, Seaver and Head, Ltd.]], and began a long association with that firm and its successor, the [[Wellman, Smith, Owen Engineering Corporation]], of Westminster, which lasted for thirty-eight years. He was promoted to the post of chief engineer in 1910 and was appointed managing director in 1916.
 
On the reconstitution of the company in 1920 under its present title he became a partner and held the appointment of chief engineer, occupying this position until his death, which occurred at Purley on 1st March 1943. Mr. Smith was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1906 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1910, and to Membership in 1918.
